Photography commissions for 3Ts hospital redevelopment will capture spirit of place

Willis Newson in partnership with Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust, Photoworks and the University of Brighton are delivering four photography commissions for CONNECT – the 3Ts Hospital Redevelopment Public Art Programme.

The photography commissions will deliver a permanent collection of photographic artworks sited across 36 public waiting rooms within the new 3Ts redevelopment of the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, to open from 2020.

The new commissions will form part of CONNECT, the public art programme for the 3Ts hospital redevelopment.  The programme is replacing all the buildings on the front half of the Royal Sussex County Hospital site with two new state-of-the-art clinical facilities.

CONNECT will help create a distinctive identity for the hospital and a legacy of accessible, high-quality public art for the city, county and community.

Underlining a sense of place connecting patients and the local environment, the four themes chosen for the photography programme of CONNECT are Sussex, South Downs, Brighton and Coast.

Internationally recognised photographer, Helen Sear, has been selected for the major photography commission, which will take the theme of Sussex as a starting point for the creation of a new series of works.

Helen Sear, who represented Wales at the 56th Venice Biennale, says

‘This commission will be an exciting and challenging opportunity for me to extend and explore the emotional influence of images within a truly public context, and to work alongside experts from the field of medicine, hospital communities and architectural environments. I lived and worked in Sussex for three years and I’m looking forward to revisiting and rediscovering the county.’

Photographers for the three remaining photography commissions of Brighton, Coast and South Downs will be appointed in early 2018.

We hope that these commissions will go beyond a direct documentary response to place, conveying instead an experience and understanding of the spirit of place, gained through relationships with local communities.
