Guy's Cancer Day Unit wins BBH Award

15 November 2011

Artwork at Guy’s Hospital’s Cancer Day Unit described as ‘exceptional’ and ‘stunning’ has won this year’s Building Better Healthcare Award for Best Use of Visual Art in Healthcare.

We were particularly pleased to hear this as Willis Newson worked with the Trust to scope a brief for this project and helped them to choose the right artists for it. The new £3.9m facility opened in April 2011, featuring work by artists Heather Barnett and Will Holloway in an uplifting exploration of the feelings and emotions that form part of the experience of patients receiving cancer treatment .

As ever, competition for this award was fierce and we are also very proud of our own shortlisted entry to this category.  This was for another cancer care unit:  the programme of artwork devised and implemented by us for the recent refurbishment of Bristol’s Haematology and Oncology Centre.  As a former patient of the unit said, “Because you come here when you’ve got cancer, all the artwork everywhere does make a huge difference. […] it helps to relax you.”
